On 8 March 2025, the Global Geoparks Network joins the campaign of the United Nations and UNESCO to celebrate the International Women’s Day under the theme, “For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment.”
This year’s theme calls for action that can unlock equal rights, power and opportunities for all and a future where no one is left behind.
Central to this vision is empowering the next generation—youth, particularly young women and adolescent girls—as catalysts for lasting change.
The Global Geoparks Network celebrates this special day as women had always a vital role and responsibilities in the creation and development of the Global Geoparks.
Women took responsibility to strengthen the contribution of Geoparks to the local communities. They are pioneers in utilizing heritage (geological, natural and cultural) as a tool for the re-vitalization of rural areas.
Through women cooperatives they promoted a new model for new quality services and local -products to boost geotourism development!
Besides, the year 2025 is a pivotal moment as it marks the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.
This document is the most progressive and widely endorsed blueprint for women’s and girls’ rights worldwide that transformed the women’s rights agenda in terms of legal protection, access to services, youth engagement, and change in social norms, stereotypes and ideas stuck in the past.
The Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action enshrines that promise. It is still the world’s most comprehensive, visionary plan ever created to achieve equal rights of all women and girls.
The world cannot wait for another 30 years to fulfil the promise of gender equality.
Today we stand stronger, more united, more diverse, and determined to become the first generation to achieve gender equality.
The Global Geoparks Network shares Geopark Stories through digital platforms to emphasize the role of women in Geopark Building on the 2025 International Women’s Day, using the hashtag #ForAllWomenAndGirls to spark dialogue and inspire action.
In Geoparks every day we celebrate women’s and men’s contribution in a heritage driven sustainable local development!
